Blog - First Nations Collaborative | Culture is centred when Culture is the framework.
The First Nations Collaborative continues to strengthen its role as a culturally grounded, community-led space for connection, reflection and collective life promotion and suicide prevention action.
Over time, First Nations leaders, practitioners, Elders and community members have come together through the First Nations Collaborative to explore cultural identity, leadership, youth wellbeing and the power of collective voice.
This intentionally First Nations only space remains a cornerstone of cultural safety: a place where people can speak openly, share lived experience and shape the future of First Nations life promotion and suicide prevention in FNQ. Each gathering builds on the last, deepening relationships, strengthening cultural governance and expanding the Collaborative’s influence across organisations and communities.
Discussion and exploration are grounded in culture and reinforce the importance of culturally led approaches in life promotion and suicide prevention. Conversations are always thoughtful, grounded and rich with lived experience.
Themes have included:
Culture as a core determinant of wellbeing and suicide prevention
How lived experience and community knowledge can be elevated
Ways services can better support cultural healing practices
How shared understanding strengthens relationships across the Collaborative
Leadership - personal meaning, the significance of cultural leadership and how cultural leadership is applied in the workplace
The need to strengthen First Nations men’s programs through collaborative effort
Youth wellbeing and the challenges faced by young people, cultural strengths and the collective responsibility shared across communities and services.
Guest speakers have enriched the Collaborative’s time together and deepened opportunities. From ensuring First Nations youth leading focused discussions through to discussions with Dr Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat (PhD) a Yupungathi and Meriam woman, sharing expertise and perspectives on co-design and First Nations data sovereignty.
The First Nations Collaborative is:
A safe space for reflection and connection
A platform for cultural leadership
A place where lived experience guides the way
A growing movement strengthening First Nations suicide prevention.
Each time the First Nations Collaborative comes together, a powerful truth is reinforced: when First Nations people lead, systems shift, communities strengthen and pathways to healing become clearer.
